Artist Statement

Through Mimi C. Huang’s artwork, she strives to capture the essence of her subjects, delving beyond their physical features to reveal the emotions, stories, and inner worlds that lie beneath the surface. Her portraits are not mere representations but rather windows into the souls of the models, inviting viewers to connect with them on a deeper, emotional level. It is a celebration of the diversity, complexity, and beauty of human experience.

Mimi brings a unique perspective to her creations, drawing on her cultural heritage, personal experiences, and artistic sensibilities to produce captivating works of art. In her latest abstract art series, she explores the concept of Five Phases, also known as Five Elements, which constitute the foundation of cosmology in ancient Chinese philosophy.

The interaction among these five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—brings about cosmic changes such as births, deaths, growths, declines, and changes of seasons. Continuously, one element acts onto the other, and then another forms an unending cycle of creation and destruction. These five elements are often associated with five distinctive colors—green, red, yellow, white, and black in the same order. Five elements are neither defined by hierarchy nor by distinct boundaries; they embody flowing energy. Through these abstract paintings, Mimi attempts to explore the all-encompassing yet not entirely tension-free possibilities each color presents—the yin-yang blend of the pulls of opposite forces. Where friendship resides, animosity can also be found. Devastation and crisis are forever present. But out of destruction, there is always rebirth and creation.

Currently, Mimi is developing a new series that reflects her memories in Taiwan and identity issues as an immigrant in the US.
